Carlo Calabrese, ND, MPH is a Senior Research Scientist at Bastyr University, Visiting Research Professor at National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) and Affiliate Associate Professor at Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine. He has performed and published mixed-methods clinical trials and observational studies in nutrients, botanicals, and complex complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practices.  Early in his career, he led the effort to secure the US Department of Education’s recognition of the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education, the naturopathic profession’s academic accrediting agency and then became NCNM’s Clinic Director and Dean of Clinical Education.  Turning to research, he was a founder and co-director of the Bastyr U. Research Institute, taught biostatistics and epidemiology at Bastyr, and authored the first successful application for an NIH grant to a naturopathic institution. He developed the first basic sciences laboratory and the first research clinical facility at a CAM institution there. While a Senior Investigator at NCNM’s Helfgott Research Institute, he served on NIH’s National Advisory Council for (CAM) and the National Center for CAM Data and Safety Monitoring Board.  He contributed to the establishment of research ethics boards at both NCNM and Bastyr and was co-principal investigator for the development of the Naturopathic Medical Research Agenda 2002-5. In 2009, he initiated the Naturopathic Physicians Research Network. His current studies are in chronic disease and aging and practice-based research, and he mentors several NIH-funded research fellows.
